Winter Skin Care

As winter winds and cold, dry air dehydrate our skin—what’s a woman to do?  Slather their skin with moisturizers, right?

Wrong.

A moisturizer is like “dessert” to your skin—it feels good, nice and smooth, but does little to nothing for your skin cells that lay beneath the surface—the source of skin aging.  That’s why it’s important to remember the “main course” of skin care—products that activate, stimulate and protect your skin.

During winter, it’s especially important to:

Exfoliate.  The dull, dry skin cells on the surface of the skin should be exfoliated, and there are a couple of reasons for this.  (1) Exfoliation allows younger, healthier skin cells can emerge, (2) you can enhance the penetration of other skin care products, because they don’t get trapped by the superficial cells.  If anti-aging products (and these are generally the pricey ones!) remain on the surface of your skin, they’re pretty useless. Allow them to work, and work hard!  (3) Exfoliation deep cleans the pores, and helps reduce excess oils. During the summer, I recommend exfoliating twice a week, but during the winter, every day.  Use Exfoliating Polish in the shower; it’s easier to rinse off that way.
Protect.  During winter the days are shorter, but UVB rays will stay damage your skin, and UVA rays will penetrate through windows and go straight to the dermis—where they can create permanent damage .  If you’re headed to the mountains for skiing (or even if you’re a ski bunny), remember that UV rays are intensified by snow and high altitude.  Taking a vacation from sunscreen during the winter is a big mistake.

Avoid the use of hot water.  It may feel good for a few minutes (no showers longer than 10 minutes, please), but will dehydrate your skin, deplete the natural oils and create parched, chapped, dry skin.
Your face and hands need extra care during the winter, because they have greater exposure.  Be sure to exfoliate and hydrate!
With shorter days and colder temperatures, most of us spend more time indoors during the winter, where the air is warmer, but also dryer.  Use a humidifer, don’t overuse space heaters (including your car), and drink plenty of water.
Escape.  These are stressful times.  Find time for yourself.  Take a warm bath, read a good book, do something just for yourself.  I like to study foreign languages, especially French, because it’s a brief respite from the real world and 24-hour news.  Do something that you enjoy for short, daily escapes.

While you take care of everyone else this holiday season, be sure to take care of yourself (and your skin!)

Healthy Skin Care All Winter Long

May 19th, 2010 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in skin care

We may not want to admit it, but winter is just around the corner. This means that your skin care regime must change in order to accommodate those harsh winds and dry days.

Stocking up on quality skin care products is a good idea, though these products alone won’t help you fight those winter winds. Thankfully, there are some things that you can do to protect your skin all winter long. Do you want to know the best part about winter skin care steps? They are easy to accomplish, and they will provide you with glowing skin all year long.

Let’s begin with dry skin, since it is the number one skin care complaint during the winter months. Many people believe that dry skin is caused by a lack of oil within the skin. Simply put, this is not true. You see, dry skin occurs when water is lacking. Drink more water during the winter months, and make sure to slather yourself in a good natural moisturizer when you get out of the shower every morning.

Additionally, if you get into the habit of eating healthy foods that contain lots of fatty acids, you will find that your skin responds favourably to this type of diet. Foods like nuts, figs, dried fruits, and some seeds are packed with the nutrients that your skin needs. It is also really important to use a great facial moisturizer daily.

What is considered a “good” facial moisturizer? Well, a lot of skin care products claim to be made from natural, healthy, ingredients, but the fact is that many of these products contain alcohol. Alcohol will dry out your face faster than any winter wind will. So, if you are using an alcohol based moisturizer every day, you are effectively sucking the moisture out of your skin daily.

Instead, look for a moisturizer that contains natural ingredients. Also, follow up your nightly cleansing routine with a good mask that will replenish your skin. Masks that contain mud are packed with nutrients and ingredients that will help fight dry winter skin. Skin care during the winter months is a bit different from skin care during the summer months, so make sure to switch skin care products accordingly.

How often should you change your skin care products? Well, that depends upon the quality of the product itself. Products that are made from wholesome ingredients tend to work wonders all year long. However, if you are using a product that dries your skin out, you can be sure that this product will not help your skin at all. As you can see, the types of skin care products that you use really will make a difference this winter.

Those winter winds are harsh – there’s no getting around this fact. Still, you can fight the brutal hands of Mother Nature with just a few quick skin care tips. Remember to moisturize, drink plenty of water, eat the right fruits, and to use top natural products. When it comes to skin care, it never pays to neglect the needs of your skin.
