Why Do Skin Care Products Fail to Work?

How many times have you bought skin care products and used them and then realize they just don’t stand up to their claims? Often this can happen, the skin care products just fail to work and show the desired results. But before you decide to throw them away, consider some reasons why they might not be working correctly.

Changing Skin Type
Though you are born with a particular skin type, it can change in with time. As we age, our skin becomes drier. This is because the natural collagen and elastin fibers in the skin surface break down thus reducing the oil production and moisture retention abilities of the skin.

If you are way past your 20’s, chances are that your skin is relatively drier now. Therefore, skin care products designed for oily skin wouldn’t perform. Rather they will just dry your skin further. So if you continue using products that you used in your teenage years, they would obviously fail to show required results.

It’s best to use a gentle cleanser like Obagi C-Cleansing Gel that contains Vitamin C. It gently cleans the skin and leaves it soft and fresh.

Another factor that can cause skin type to change are environmental conditions. Cold weather can make the skin dry due to lower moisture in the air. Sticking to your regular moisturizer would not be sufficient then.

In winter, even if you have oily skin, you should switch to a more hydrating moisturizer rather than just sticking to a regular face wash. Try the NeoCutis Journee Bio-Restorative Day Cream.

Residual Products on the Skin
You may know what skin care products to use, but do you know how to use them effectively? After you apply your cleanser, do you rinse it off well?

When you don’t rinse well enough, residual particles from skin care products tend to stay on the skin. As a result, your skin pores can get clogged and become oily or further give rise to acne. Here, the skin care product is not at fault. Rather, it’s about how you remove it..

Make sure you rinse your face thoroughly with tepid water after using cleaners or face washes. Also, use a toner after you cleanse your skin in to make sure that all the particles of the former have been removed. You can use Obagi Nu-Derm Toner.

Too Many Incompatible Ingredients
Women often tend to use too many skin care products at the same time. But instead of producing enhanced effects on the skin, it actually deteriorates the skin. This is because similar ingredients or ones that have the same function do not work well when combined together.

Make sure you do not use skin care products that contain glycolic acid, salicylic acid and retinoids together at the same time. This will irritate your skin and cause reactions to sensitive skin types. Moreover, there may be certain ingredients in skin care products that do not suit you.

Poor Product Penetration
How well a skin care product works on your skin depends on how well it gets absorbed into the skin. Product penetration is a major factor that influences the efficiency of skin care products.

The outer layer of the skin surface is made up dry dead skin cells. As we age, they clump together and form a barrier that prevents skin care products from penetrating effectively. To break through this barrier and let the active ingredients get absorbed inside the skin surface, make sure to exfoliate the skin regularly. About twice a week is usually enough.

Also, do not forget to moisturize the skin well in order to maintain hydration.

Irritating Ingredients
There may be certain ingredients in skin care products that might not suit your skin type. Many products contain extra ingredients like essential oils and fragrance agents that may have reactions on the skin and make it oily and further promote acne breakouts.

If you have sensitive skin, you should clearly avoid skin care products that contain additional fragrances and perfume agents.

Unrealistic Expectations
Anti-aging skin care products do work to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of skin aging. However, you need to know that they are not magical wands that can make you look like you were in your teens.

The damage occurred slowly and the healing process will take time. Though there are certain anti-aging skin care products like the iS Clinical Youth Complex that guarantees instant elimination of wrinkles and fine lines by plumping them up, permanent reduction does take time. Give enough time for your skin care products to perform before throwing them away.

African American Skin Care Products: :The Right Ingredients for Black Skin

August 12th, 2010 by admin | 25 Comments | Filed in Education

African American Skin Care Products must have the right ingredients to really work.  Some ingredients should be avoided for black skin or any other type of skin. Using the right ingredients will give you the healthy radiant skin you want.

In this article I will show you which ingredients work and which ones to avoid.  Some ingredients, for example, will cause hyper pigmentation while others will cause de-pigmentation.

Here is what all skin types should avoid and what all skin tones need.

Ingredients to Avoid

-Sodium methyl paraben (all parabens)
-Petroleum-based products
-Chemical bleaching agents

*Sodium methyl paraben can be found in many skin care products.  It can affect the pigmentation of skin. Also parabens have been discovered in patients with breast cancer. So it is best to avoid these ingredients. Parabens, and there are many different kinds, basically are in a product as a preservative.  There are safer ways to preserve a skin care product.  I’ll come to that in a minute.

*Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is not skin friendly as it is often promoted.  It clogs the pores of the skin. Also it can result in hyper pigmentation of skin. Other related ingredients to strictly avoid are propylene glycol, wood-based alcohols, mineral oil and any petroleum-based product.  There are other safe ingredients you can use.  Keep reading.

*Chemical bleaching agents - Chemical bleaching compounds should be avoided because they can damage skin.  If you want a lighter skin tone or to even out skin spots, use a whitening agent that is safe. I would be happy to recommend one that I found that is very effective and very safe. See my website listed below.

Ingredients to Look For

Extra Pone Nut Grass
Natural Vitamin E

Nut grass is a very effective ingredient that is safe and will even out the tone of your skin.  Interestingly, it doesn’t take very much to do it.

Natural vitamin E is an antioxidant.  Since it is an antioxidant it will usually help get rid of hyperpigmentation of  skin. In other words, skin spots.

Sebum is our skin oil that also is our skin moisturizer.  However, some of us have either too dry skin or too oily or some range in between.  So skin problems can vary from one person to the next. But skin problems in general have nothing to do with black skin or any other tone.  Skin is skin.  What the problem usually is, is the product being used on the skin.  Especially if it is petroleum based.  Petrolatum feels good but it can do a lot of subtle harm.  If you use a good moisturizer, like the one I use, you will have 90% of your skin problems solved.

Sebum comes from the sebaceous glands.  All skin regardless of the tone have sebaceous glands.  Some just produce differently in some individuals.  Sebum is the natural moisturizer for our skin.  Using alcohol on the skin can cause it to produce too much, resulting in oily skin.  Jojoba and passion fruit extract are two ingredients you will want  to include in your skin care regimen if you have dry skin.

Anti-Aging Ingredients

Anti aging products such lotions and creams are very popular right now.  Many companies are promoting anti-aging products.  But beware most of them don’t work and could even make your skin worse.  So what does work?

Functional Keratin is the most successful and effective of all the antiaging products I have researched.  Functional keratin combined with Wakame kelp extract and antioxidants CoQ10 and natural vitamin E promotes the increase of new skin fibers and skin cells.  Wakame helps prevent sagging by increaing skin firmness.

What causes harm to skin cells and other body cells is what is called free radicals.  They basically go on a rampage and hurt other cells.  The antidote is antioxidants found in compounds like vitamin E.

Important-Please Read

Remember this please, avoid any ingredient ending in paraben, (for black skin especially Sodium methyl paraben).  Avoid all skin care and other products that list petrolatum as an ingredient.  Don’t even think about using a chemical bleaching agent.  Use the ones I recommend because they work and are safe to the skin.  See my website listed below for my personally tested skin cream. – Margaret Bell

5 Things You Must Know Before Buying Men?s Skin Care Products

August 11th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Education

man holding his skin
skin

Men have been notorious of being careless with their skin. Their skin care regimens seldom go beyond soap and water.

However, lately there has been increased awareness among men about the needs and requirements of their skin and this has fuelled a market segment consisting of special skin care products for men. There is such an extensive range of men’s skin care products available in the market that it gets difficult sometimes to make a sane choice.

While some prefer to try out a variety of skin care products to see what works for them, others stick to one particular product and hope it does the trick. Choosing skin care products that work well for your particular skin can be a daunting task. This is because there is plethora of options available, all of them claiming to be the best and promising to do wonders to the skin. In midst of all these, how do you know what the best skin care product is for you.

Here are 5 points you should consider while buying skin care products for men.

Know Your Skin Type
Before you go about finding skin care products, you should know what exactly your skin needs. And this can only be assessed by knowing your skin type. Is it normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive? Skin care products are designed to address the specific requirements of the various types of skin. For example, dry skin needs more moisture, oily skin needs controlled exfoliation, acne prone skin needs bacteria fighting ingredients that heal acne and so on. Determining your skin type will let you know what skin care products best suit you.

Get a Men’s Cleanser
Cleansers are a very important part of the skin care regimen. And since men’s skin is intrinsically different from women’s they need special cleansers designed for their specific gender. Men generally have bigger skin pores than women and accumulate comparatively more dirt and debris. Thus they need a tougher cleanser that can flush out the toxins and clean the skin well.

Include a Toner & Moisturizer in your Regimen

Most people fail to realize the importance of toners in the skin care regimen and prefer not to use it at all. Men’s skin succumbeds to harsh treatments like shaving and this disrupts the pH balance of the skin. Toners not only help balance the pH levels of the skin but also ensure that the skin pores are absolutely clean and no residue of cleanser is left behind.
Additionally, when the skin is stripped ofnatural moistures due to shaving and cleansing, using a moisturizer hydrates the skin and restores the lost moisture. However, if you have oily or acneic skin, use a lightweight oil-free moisturizer. Moisturizers relieve skin dryness and prevent premature aging of the skin and keep wrinkles and fine lines at bay.

Buy Skin Treatment Products
If you have severe skin conditions like acne, anti-aging concerns or so on, make sure you buy specialized skin treatment products rather than general skin care products. This is because treatment products address specific skin concerns, go to the root level of the problem and cure the same.

Obagi Clenziderm M.D. Acne Therapeutic System for Normal to Oily Skin – It is a three step system that identifies and treats the primary causes of acne and help promote a clear skin. The system includes:

Obagi Daily Care Foaming Cleanser (4 fl. oz) – To clean off all the dirt and debris from the skin and reveal brighter skin from within
Obagi Pore Therapy (4 fl oz) – To clean the skin pores of dirt and oil residues
Obagi Serum Gel (1.8 fl oz) – To deep cleanse and treat acne with benzoyl peroxide

Obagi Clenziderm M.D. Acne Therapeutic System for Normal to Dry Skin is the same thing as above but it treats acne concerns on normal and dry skin types. The system includes:

Obagi Daily Care Cream Cleanser (6.5 fl oz) – To remove the excessive oil residues and dirt
Obagi Therapeutic Lotion (1.6 fl. oz.) – To remove acne and prevent further breakouts and inflammations
Obagi Therapeutic Moisturizer (1.7 fl oz) – To moisturize and hydrate your skin

Buy Suitable Shaving Products
Make sure the shaving products that you buy suit your epidermis type and care for your specific skin condition. Shaving products generally are comprised of three major components – Pre-Shave, Shaving Creams and Aftershave. All these products have moisturizing and conditioning agents that hydrate the skin and enhance its quality.

Best Skin Products – Revitol Cellulite Cream

July 17th, 2010 by admin | 25 Comments | Filed in Education

Revitol Cellulite Cream helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. Revitol Cellulite Cream can be used to assist in the appearance of tighter, healthier appearing skin in areas applied. With Revitol you can reduce the appearance of unwanted lumps and bumps. You just apply the cream for a smoother look.

Revitol would not work as well as it does without caffeine! Studies suggest that caffeine helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. However drinking more coffee will not give you the results you will see with Revitol, for the simple reason that the caffeine will never actually reach the fat cells that cause cellulite.

Caffeine works as a stimulant as well as a vasodilator; in the upper level of the dermis when applied topically and also widens the blood vessels in the area. When blood is allowed to move into the region the natural metabolic pathways of the body are stimulated to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

How long will a supply last you? This depends on how much area you need to cover; if you only need to use Revitol Cellulite cream on your upper thighs, then it will last you longer than when using it on your thighs, stomach and buttocks. It also depends on how much product you use and how often you reapply the product. Generally you should have at least a month’s supply with one jar of Revitol Cellulite Cream. Also make sure to use enough for the product to be absorbed completely, but not too much so you do not loose any cream because it rubs off on your clothing.

You are a dynamic beautiful person, so don’t let the cellulite hold you back! In a few weeks you could be wearing those sexy dresses and skirts, without feeling self conscious!

Some Common Myths About Skin Care Products

July 16th, 2010 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in skin care

The skin care industry is forever on its toes with new skin care products being launched by the day. There are ample websites over the internet that preaches the good and bad habits in skin care. The talk has spread so far and so wide that it has given way to certain myths and misconceptions over time.

Here are some of the common myths and misconceptions doing rounds of the skin care industry and the correct facts beneath them:

Myth 1: Using more Skin Care Products will guarantee quicker results
Nothing can be more wrong or misconceived than this statement. Skin care products are specially formulated to treat particular skin damages. They cure them and work faster than natural or home treatments. But that is not to suggest that applying too many of them will further fasten the healing process. In fact using too many skin care products will only work to damage your skin than anything else. The active ingredients with these products can react with one another and pose harmful side effects for your skin.
Skin care products that contain vitamin c, retinol, and alpha-hydroxy acids help to smooth the skin. Likewise agents like salicylic acids and benzyl peroxide heal acne and blemishes. These ingredients when used in higher concentration tend to be reactive and thus pose as a threat to your skin.
Always apply skin creams and other such products in small quantities and massage it lightly onto the skin.

Myth 2: Everyone needs Skin Toners
Not really! Though it is always advised to follow a skin care regimen and make use of a cleanser, toner and moisturizer, the truth is you can beg to differ. Most people need to use toners and it is a healthy practice too but that doesn’t mean it is an absolute essential for everyone. Toners do the job of closing down open skin pores and ripping them of any internal debris. This process is instantly followed by the moisturizing of the skin. But in some cases, toners can strip off the skin’s natural oils and leave them dry. Therefore, it is not as essential as it is perceived.

Myth 3: you can get addicted to Lip Balms
Lip balms and addiction have nothing in common. Some people claim that lip balms are often added with ingredients that dry out your lips so that you buy them again and again more frequently. This is however a tall tale. If at all a lip balm has drying effects on the skin, there is enough reason not to buy it the other time.

The addiction people talk about has got to do with the habit of licking lips regularly which creates a drying effect of the lips. Lip balms on the other hand contain moisturizing properties that keep the lips moist and smooth.

Myth 4: There is no need to buy separate Eye Creams
The skin on your face varies. As compared to the other areas of your face, the skin around your eyes is more fragile and delicate. Therefore it requires special treatment and care. The regular face creams and lotions become a little too harsh for the delicate skin at the eye contours.
Eye creams are exclusively formulated to nourish the thin and fragile skin around the eyes and provide them maximum comfort with as little stress as possible.
